The tablet market is ever-growing and it is currently dominated by Apple with the iPad and iOS. But the latest figures show that the company’s grip could be loosening, with it having lost around 10% market share to Android in the penultimate three months of 2012.

Research by Strategy Analytics indicates that shipments of Apple’s iPad accounted for 58% of the market in the months of October, November and December 2011, while sales of Android tablets accounted for 39% of the market. In terms of numbers, Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads compared with shipments of 10.5 million Android tablets during the period. As an added note, Microsoft accounted for 1.5% of the market during this time.

So, the numbers indicate that Apple is still the market leader and by quite a way, too. However, in the same three months in 2010, Apple accounted for 68% of sales compared to 29% for Android. So in one year the gap between the two operating systems has been cut by 20%, a significant amount.

Despite this, as has been previously noted, Apple is still the market leader and it has become so with just one tablet compared to the hundreds, if not thousands, of different Android tablets out there. I expect Microsoft to make an impact on the market with the release of Windows 8 which will be the first Microsoft OS designed and optimised for tablets. As things stand, the tablet market is not one Microsoft is trying to penetrate but this will change with Windows 8.

Competition can only be a good thing for the market so lets hope the tablet war continues. The soon-to-be-released iPad 3 is sure to help Apple in its attempts to continue dominating the market but the threat of Android and eventually Windows 8 cannot be ignored. And who knows if webOS may even make a comeback in some form? Things are getting interesting…

The Windows operating system has been met with a warm reception, especially since they teamed up with Nokia to produce the Lumia range of smartphones. Although the sales are nothing to boast about, analysts iSuppli are predicting that the Windows smartphone operating system will overtake Apple’s iOS by 2015. This is a bold prediction but they believe that by 2015, Windows Phone will have captured 16.7 per cent of the market – despite only making up two per cent of the smartphone market last year.

The key to this prediction appears to be Nokia’s use of the Windows operating system. Nokia are looking to capture a share of the smartphone market after it failed to make an impact with its own smartphone operating system. Nokia’s shares have declined dramatically over the last 18 months with the main reason for this being their struggle to transfer into the smartphone market.

This comes just a day after Apple announced its plans to make educational content available for its iPad tablets. They are looking to revolutionise learning in American classrooms by trading paper for iPad. We’ve found a great site which gives you the best cheap iPad deals.

In the presentation yesterday, Apple introduced iBooks 2, essentially allowing books to be far more interactive. They are set to offer more support for the development of these textbooks, with the release of iBooks Author, a Mac application that can be used to design them.

As well as iBooks 2, Apple announced iTunes U, an application which allows teachers to distribute their lectures and other educational material via the internet.

It’s an interesting move by Apple and it sees them hoping to capture a slice of the $10 billion textbook industry.

Many people are hailing 2012 as the year of the ultrabook, something backed-up by the appearance of a sleuth of such laptops at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Apple’s MacBook Air was one of the first ultrabooks on the market but now all the major computer companies are releasing their own versions of the device.

For those of you who didn’t know, ultrabooks are ultra-slim laptops, most of which are less than an inch thick. They tend to have solid state hard drives (SSDs) which vary from the hard disk drives (HDDs) found on most computers and laptops. SSDs are supposed to be better as they have no moving parts, are quieter and faster than HDDs. But the result of this is a higher price and often lower capacity – many ultrabooks tend to have around 128GB capacity (with cheaper models having even less) whereas there are many cheaper laptops (using HDDs) available nowadays with 500GB capacity or more.

Obviously, the main attraction of ultrabooks is their ultra-portability; they are very easy to transport around. They’re likely to be especially useful for people who travel a lot but don’t want to lug around a more hefty laptop the whole time.

The question is, can they replace normal laptops or will the two always exist in unison? One of the oft-quoted problems of ultrabooks is their lack of an optical drive for playing DVDs and CDs. However Samsung’s Series 5 Ultra range of ultrabooks do have optical drives and remain under an inch thick so there are some with optical drives. Others would argue that optical drives are not needed nowadays anyway with the majority of content being downloaded rather than installed or ripped from CDs and DVDs. There is one other option for ultrabooks lacking an optical drive, and that is to attach an external one. This solution is ok for use at home but obviously it slightly defeats the object of an ultrabook if you always need to use the optical drive and thus have to take it with you everywhere!

I personally think it’s inevitable that ultrabooks will eventually become the norm as their price declines. Right now most of them are relatively expensive but as with any new technology, the price will reduce over time. With the ability to include optical drives and keep ultrabooks super thin, no features need to be lost, and of course everyone thinner laptops appeal to everyone. So I imagine within 5 years ultrabooks will be very widespread and most manufacturers will focus on producing them rather than their bulkier cousins (normal laptops).

New product releases from Apple draw worldwide attention and spark fervour amongst the company’s fans. Nowadays, the most hotly-anticipated new releases are those of the iPhone and iPad. It is widely expected that Apple will launch a new iPad 3 in 2012, so what new features or changes would you like to see?

Speculation covers almost every possibility. From smaller changes such as improved specs to major changes such as the possible release of a smaller model, possibly with a 7″ screen, the rumour mills are always churning out new ideas and the advent of 2012 will only increase speculation.

So, imagine you’re a designer at Apple, and have been given the responsibility of coming up with new ideas for the iPad 3. It’s an exciting prospect, isn’t it? What would you change or add to the iPad 3? Would you go for small improvements or a major redesign?

I’m sure we’d all like an iPhone 4S for Christmas; I know I would! But unfortunately I think this year one won’t be forthcoming due to the price. So instead I’m trying to grab myself a free iPhone 4S and I’d strongly encourage you to give a go to!

What you must realise is how easy it is. Of course, we’re all used to living in the age of instant gratification when people want things now. Waiting a little bit isn’t an option. But this attitude is one of the reasons for the current economic crisis with people spending money they can’t afford to. So, instead, why not spend a little time completing a few easy steps to get a free iPhone 4S instead (or maybe an iPad 2, Macbook Air or iPod Touch; the choice is yours!).

1) Get started – click here.
2) Once you’ve signed up, complete one of the offers. There are many to choose from. FreebieJeebies are usually quite quick at approving your completion of the offer.
3) Then, get in your friends’ ears and encourage them to do the same (remember to give them your referral link first!). A post on Facebook is sure to attract some interest and you can ask your close friends in person and even show them what they need to do. Think about it – in a week or two enough friends may have completed an offer for you to receive an amazing free gift!

Times are tough. We know this as much as anyone. But many of us are still willing to spend our hard-earned money on goods that we don’t really need. I mean, spending around $500 or more (or about £400 if you’re from the UK!) on a new iPad 2 is to spend money that could probably go to better use elsewhere.

So, rather than putting yourself in a potentially sticky financial situation just to get the latest iPhone, iPad or Macbook, why not take our advice and try to get one for free instead? We really don’t think enough people have realised quite how easy it is to do. Yes, it takes a little longer than going into the shop and handing over a big chunk of your cash, but it also means you don’t have to go into the shop and you certainly don’t have to hand over any cash!

Our site has all the information about how you can get a free iPhone or free iPad 2. Please, don’t be daunted by the fact it involves a little work! After all, you could be getting yourself a new toy worth a few hundred dollars/pounds for what could turn out to be just a few hours work. We think it’s a pretty good deal. How about you?

Despite how easy and quick it is to get a free product of your choice, many people don’t bother going through with it. Let me make it clear – you can’t just sign up and then expect a free iPhone through your door the next day! But, its a lot easier to do than many people think. Once again, let me outline the required steps:
1) Sign up at FreebieJeebies
2) Complete one of the many offers available.
3) Refer at least 2 friends to do the same.

Once step three is complete, you’re entitled to a free product. Obviously the more friends you refer, the better the free gift will be.

Despite the simplicity of this offer, a lot of people don’t even complete the second step. This may be because it requires a small payment (typically just a few dollars/pounds or less), or because it looks like it’ll take too long. But really, is 15 minutes too much time to spare when there is the prospect of a free iPad 2 at the end of it? I think not!

The third step of the process, referring friends, puts some people off too. They think they won’t be able to get others to sign up. But it is a lot easier than you may think. Are you an active member of a social network site? If so, all it may take is for you to post your link on your profile. You’re guaranteed to have people click the link, as everyone wants a free iPhone or free iPad 2, don’t they? You can then talk to those who are interested in the offer and tell them how easy it is to get a free product of their choice! You’re bound to get at least a few people who complete an offer.

Just think about it – all of this will take under 30 minutes to do. And you could end up with a free iPhone or free iPad 2 at the end of it. Its a no brainer, surely?
