The tablet market is ever-growing and it is currently dominated by Apple with the iPad and iOS. But the latest figures show that the company’s grip could be loosening, with it having lost around 10% market share to Android in the penultimate three months of 2012.
Research by Strategy Analytics indicates that shipments of Apple’s iPad accounted for 58% of the market in the months of October, November and December 2011, while sales of Android tablets accounted for 39% of the market. In terms of numbers, Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads compared with shipments of 10.5 million Android tablets during the period. As an added note, Microsoft accounted for 1.5% of the market during this time.
So, the numbers indicate that Apple is still the market leader and by quite a way, too. However, in the same three months in 2010, Apple accounted for 68% of sales compared to 29% for Android. So in one year the gap between the two operating systems has been cut by 20%, a significant amount.
Despite this, as has been previously noted, Apple is still the market leader and it has become so with just one tablet compared to the hundreds, if not thousands, of different Android tablets out there. I expect Microsoft to make an impact on the market with the release of Windows 8 which will be the first Microsoft OS designed and optimised for tablets. As things stand, the tablet market is not one Microsoft is trying to penetrate but this will change with Windows 8.
Competition can only be a good thing for the market so lets hope the tablet war continues. The soon-to-be-released iPad 3 is sure to help Apple in its attempts to continue dominating the market but the threat of Android and eventually Windows 8 cannot be ignored. And who knows if webOS may even make a comeback in some form? Things are getting interesting…
